How Powerful Was Mace Windu - Star Wars Explained
Obviously becoming a Jedi Master requires, among other things, that the individual in question is powerful. Mace Windu was considered by many to be the most powerful Jedi of his generation and his raw power was held in even higher esteem, greater than even Grand Master Yoda. Not just skills with a lightsaber, but in hand-to-hand combat as well, his physical prowess ranked him as a peer of the great Jedi of Old. So, how powerful was Mace Windu?
Hailing from the planet of Haruun Kal, Mace Windu was just 6 months old when the Jedi visited his planet and showed interest in taking the young Mace Windu to the academy for training. With no parents, his clan allowed the Jedi to take Mace Windu with them. Though incredibly skilled in all manners of training, his progress was hindered when he was unable to construct a lightsaber, despite multiple attempts. For months Windu saw visions of himself wielding a purple lightsaber in combat until he requested that the Order leave him on the planet Hurrikaine until he fulfilled these visions. Mace Windu was eventually rewarded with the purple crystal after aiding the inhabitants of Hurrikaine and was finally able to construct his iconic lightsaber.
The Might of Mace Windu
Graduating to a Jedi Knight, he was able to train several apprentices to knighthood. Though he was since as harsh, the Jedi Council and Order never complained, as his methods created numerous powerful Jedi knights. It was at the point of becoming a Jedi Master that Mace Windu began truly taking to lightsaber combat. As a means to combat the darkness he felt within himself, he created a new lightsaber combat form, an outlet which would allow him to channel these negative emotions. Jedi Master Windu served the Order above all else, but still desired power. When combined with his attempt to release his negative emotions, this resulted in a new lightsaber form called Vaapad, a form meant to highlight one's inner darkness as a means to channel their blade without letting it corrupt their spirit. With this, Windu walked the line between the light and the dark, drawing from both sides in order to serve the Jedi Order.
This new form was a variant of form VII, previously outlawed by the Council due it's emphasis on ferocity and innate draw from pure emotion. While Mace Windu was allowed this new form, only those he selected could ever be taught it, with the list of those rejected including Anakin Skywalker, seen as too arrogance and roguishness. Ultimately, only two other Jedi ever learned the form, though it proved too much for both, temporarily losing one to the Dark Side and permanently losing the other. Due to the razor edge this form held the practitioner on, it functioned as a trump card against the Sith. In it's purest form, it allowed the practitioner to draw the darkness out of an opponent to fuel their own lightsaber. With one completely shrouded int he Dark Side, this essentially meant that they would be fighting themselves. There has only ever been one instance of this form reaching perfection, and that was when Mace Windu defeated Emperor Palpatine, thanks to the latter's complete and unflinching allegiance to the Dark Side.
Devoid of any grace and tact, Vaapad was completely randomized and impossible to predict. A true form of power incarnate. Vaapad was also incredibly difficult to keep track of, as the moves were blindingly fast. Another benefit to this form was that it allowed Windu to use this form even when unarmed, and was found to be just as powerful.
More than lightsaber prowess and raw power, Windu inherited the rare Force ability known as Shatterpoint, allowing the practitioner to see weakness in the Force itself. Whether it be physical structures or living being, using it as a way to isolate their weakness and prevail against them. Along with that ability he could augment his physical abilities with the Force, surviving incredible falls, the ability to amplify his unarmed Vaapad form, and impressive speed just shy of Yoda. Able to perform mental probing, this was an ability he rarely used due to its association with the Dark Side. However, his desire to avoid being seen as a Dark Side user hasn't stopped him from using abilities such as the Force Crush, a violent and aggressive move. His dedication to the Jedi Order above all else is most likely what allowed him to dip into the Dark Side but remain untainted by it.
When the Windu Blows, the Cradle Will Fall
Through purely combative means, Master Windu may have seemed impossible to defeat, but for two weaknesses. He was both unable to sense manipulation and, again, was blindingly faithful to the Jedi Order. Ultimately, this is what brought about his downfall, as he was unable to see past the views of the Jedi Order and ascertain the views of the people - though this is arguably a fault of the entire Jedi Council and not just Mace Windu.
