[VIDEO] The Terror of General Grievous
The most interestingly designed Star Wars character from the prequel trilogy, General Grievous is like something out of a nightmare for many Jedi. He was once a general from a far off world who was shot down and turned into a droid cyborg and leads the droid army of the Separatists in the Clone Wars. He wields two or more lightsabers and is known for killing Jedi and taking their lightsabers as trophies. But, is he really as bad as they make him sound? Can’t you just use the Force against this monster?
The notorious Jedi killer, General Grievous was seen in the Clone Wars. He has fought several Jedi knights including Kit Fisto, Shaak Ti, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. He will kill and take their sabers, adding them to his “collection.” He butchers Jedi brutally and it is because of this that he is quite terrifying. His armor is quite durable, extremely durable even Force Lightning is impervious to it. However, he can still be Force pushed. So, why don’t more Jedi use the Force against him. Several reasons actually. Let’s put ourselves in a Jedi’s shoes.
You just got word of Grievous and you have several Jedi next to you. Long time friends of yours. You find Grievous or more he finds you as he drops in out of nowhere, killing one of your friends with his monstrous foot-claws. You ignite your saber and your friend does the same. Grievous mocks you and unveils his two sabers…what a second. His arms open up and now he has four sabers. He starts spinning his upper two like fan blades. You’ve never seen anything like this. You and your last surviving friend attempt striking Grievous but your friend stops mid blow and gets sliced down. Now it’s just you. Grievous hasn’t stopped his deadly fan…and you are dead before you can even think of your next move. This is just an example.
Grievous uses the elements of surprise and fear to win his battles. He is not Force sensitive and Dooku knew this when he began training him. Dooku trained him as a duelist and with Grievous dealing about 12 blows a second, there’s no need for the Force. He wouldn’t have time to use it if he did have the Force. Instead, Dooku taught him to undermine his enemies through fear. He tells him to retreat if he ever feels overwhelmed, live to fight another day. Must have fear, surprise, and intimidation on his side. Grievous is like an evil robotic Batman. Batman rarely uses brute force to stop criminals, instead he uses fear and intimidation by keeping to the shadows and taking his enemies down one by one.
Grievous is very calculated though. He engages weak Jedi and uses his shock value to hinder some Jedi’s Force powers. Causing them to fatally trip up. Even if a Jedi were to use the Force on him, Grievous has his foot-claws that will hold onto the ground. Grievous will avoid aggressive Jedi like Anakin Skywalker and Mace Windu. As we saw in the Legends version of Clone Wars, Windu uses the Force to crush Grievous’ chest (giving him that signature cough). In the canon universe, we see Ventress defeat Grievous on Dathomir, who is an aggressive fighter as well. So, Grievous uses his only tactic left; run.
No one can argue that the General isn’t intimidating. A coward perhaps, but cunning as well. And though a brave foe will fight and die and be remembered, a coward will flee and live to fight another day. Grievous is definitely cool looking and terrifying until Obi-Wan kills him in Revenge of the Sith. Be sure to check out the video below for more information.
