[VIDEO] The Fall of Darth Plagueis
"Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?” A memorable scene from Revenge of the Sith, we learn of a Sith Lord named Darth Plagueis who could prevent people from dying. This only further lured Anakin to the dark side which was part of Palpatine’s plan. But what about Darth Plagueis? According to Palpatine, his apprentice betrayed and killed him in order to become the master. But was it really that simple?
In Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, at almost the exact same time that Obi Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jin were battling Darth Maul on Naboo; the newly elected Chancellor Palpatine was hatching a dark plan to murder his master, Darth Plagueis. Though this is considered Legends now, it’s a grey area here as to when and where Plagueis was murdered. We know that Sidious was his apprentice. We know that Sidious killed him. But the place and time are subject to interpretation. But some backstory on Plagueis. He is a member of a race known as the Muun from the planet Mygeeto. He goes by another name, similar to Palpatine, and has a huge role for the Republic. Going by the name Hego Damask the Second, he is a simple man from the InterGalactic Banking Clan. Very similar to another Muun by the name of San Hill, who worked with the Seperatists during the Clone Wars. But Damask was so much more than a simple merchant and banker. He was a dark lord of the Sith.
Darth Plagueis found a young man on Naboo and trained him in the ways of the Force, strictly the Dark side. He taught him everything he knew. At least, almost everything. Plagueis feared the exact same fate as his former master, that he would lose his power. So, he kept his young apprentice, known as Darth Sidious, in the dark on some of the powers Plagueis had unlocked over time. Including Plagueis’ ability to stop people from dying. And it wouldn't be for many years until Sidious decides to enact his plans of murder and betrayal.
Sidious remained loyal to his master for many years, or at least pretended to. He slowly rises to power as Senator Palpatine and then into Chancellor. Behind Plagueis’ back though, Sidious went to Dathomir and spoke to Mother Talzin about recruiting a young apprentice by the name of Darth Maul. He trained him in secret and then sendt him to dispatch the two Jedi who’d gone to Naboo. It is here, at least according to Legends, that Sidious finally decided to destroy his master. This is all taken from the novel, Darth Plagueis by James Luceno.
After being elected Chancellor of the Galactic Republic and leader of the Senate, Palpatine suggested a celebration was in order with his master and Republic friend, Hego Damask, on Corescant and discusses making him co-chancellor of the Republic while feeding his master bottle after bottle of wine, intoxicating him. As Plagueis fell into a slumber, Sidious struck. Due to a Maladian attack, Plagueis had the lower half of his face severed and therefore was forced wear a transpirator mask to help with breathing, covering his face right below his nose. Making Plagueis vulnerable.
Sidious fired a bolt of Force Lightning at Plagueis’ breathing apparatus not once, but twice. He began mocking Plagueis, recalling his actions and his training of Sidious. Including the abuse and neglect inherit in how he chose to demonstrate various Dark side powers on Sidious, including Force choking Sidious on multiple occasions. Sidious called him egotistical and criticized him in a mocking manor by calling him “Darth Plagueis the Wise”
Plagueis was weak. He’d taken two hits of Force lighting. He'd fallen and trief to lift himself but failed to do so. Sidious fired a third round of lightning, more powerful than the last two. He continued to sneer at Plagueis, reminding him of how he constantly reminded Sidious of Bane’s Rule of Two. But now it would be his, Sidious' turn, to continue that tradition as master with his own apprentice. Sidious began to Force choke Plagueis while he tried to keep himself alive through the Force, attempting to us the same technique to save others on himself and failing. He was too weak, too intoxicated.
Sidious has so much hatred at this point. He claimed he could save Plagueis but stated his goal, to bring him to Death’s door and shove him through. Plagueis was “just a pawn in a game played by a genuine master.” All of Plagueis’ plans and ideas were merely Sidious’ plans carefully hidden and manipulated into Plagueis. He kept Plagueis alive as long as he did to learn everything he could from him. The Sith will have their revenge and he, Sidious, would rule the galaxy as the Emperor.
The Dark Lord of the Sith slid slowly to the floor and lay motionless, facedown, as his final breath left him. Darth Plagueis was dead. A service droid went to help him but Sidious stopped it.. Palpatine looked back at the murder scene. It would appear that Hego Damask’s breathing apparatus had malfunctioned, suffocating him and no autopsy would be required or performed. There would be no blame. Palpatine would wear a sad face as he mourns the death of the Republic’s financial ally and friend. But Palpatine alone would know that he is, was, the Dark Lord of the Sith.
I often wonder…what if Plagueis hadn’t been intoxicated and aware of his apprentice’s actions? Would he have been able to kill Sidious? Would he spare him? Interesting ideas. Perhaps someday we will get a Darth Sidious/Darth Plagueis film. The most interesting thing about their fight is that Plagueis stops defending himself at one point and focuses solely on keeping himself alive.
