[Discussion] Is The Young Han Solo Movie Doomed?
We have all heard the news of Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller being let go from the currently unnamed 'Young Han Solo' anthology film, due out May of 2018. But what does this mean for the film? What does this mean for Lucasfilm and Disney? What does this mean for Star Wars as a whole and what will come of Kathleen Kennedy's Decision to bring Ron Howard in on the project as the replacment?
When I first heard the news of the change I was initially concerned with what would come to light in their absence. I had tragic thoughts, ranging from the project going bust and not ever being made to It being made and being a disaster. Now, as we know, Lord and Miller are the masterminds behind 21 Jump Street, starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, and The Lego Movie. The comedy duo was handed the role of director back in 2016. In a statement made by Kathleen Kennedy on June 22, 2017:
The fear we all have: what will Ron Howard do and change in the film? We obviously all want this movie to do great and go on to be a box office success while, at the same time, do justice to the character of Han Solo.
In case you don't know, or don't remember, Rouge One had undergone massive reshoots to change the whole tone and feel of the movie. We here all remember the fear we felt upon learning of this news back in early 2016. We also know how amazing that movie was when we saw it in theaters.
So there must be hope for Han Solo?
Well, we know, as of now, that Ron Howard will helm the remainder of shooting on the Han Solo movie, as well the planned reshoots, which we estimate will have over 90% of the movie reshot with a new tone, feel, and atmosphere. Usually, in similar situations, 80% of the time when a director leaves a project or quits the job mid-production the project leaves with them. In this case, we all fear that the project may as well be a bust. But, director Ron Howard, is a revered director who has proven his skills with such works as American Graffiti and Rush. So we know that he is a capable director and gets along with Lucasfilm and Disney already. That's a good start.
As Howard stated on his Twitter Account
I hope to honor the great work already done & help deliver on the promise of a Han Solo film.— Ron Howard (@RealRonHoward) June 22, 2017
This gives me, and I'm sure many of you, room to breathe easy with the knowledge that he will take care of our scruffy-looking nerfherder and, to the best of his ability, do justice to the character of Han Solo.
So, to sum this all up, do we think that the Han Solo movie is doomed? No, not in the slightest. Yes, it has had a huge hiccup, but in the hands of Ron Howard, it's safe to say that this will be an amazing movie, that both honors and pays homage to Han Solo. What do you guys think?
